Peridot's Spriting Tutorial

Post by Peridot on Sun Apr 26, 2009 7:40 pm

Welcome to Peridot's spriting tutorial!
Alright, first off, here's some things you need to know:

-Don't gradient.
-The light source is coming from the top left.
-Min amount of colors used for shading(one part of the armor/sword/etc.) is 3, max is 7-10.
-Make sure the shading is noticeable.
-Don't make the shape random.
-Referencing is a good idea.
Kay.

First off, we'll be making a sword.

Let's start off with the shape.
Grab your pencil tool with black as your foreground color and draw the outline of the sword.

Now, let's start shading the hilt. I'll be using yellow and brown to shade it. Remember, don't gradient, and the light source is coming form the top left.

Alright, hilt is done. Let's move on to the chabb/guard. Make sure it looks 3 dimensional.

Lower part of the sword is done. You're almost there. Now, time to shade the blade.
The blade is where you need to be careful not to make it look gradiented.
Small/simple blades help.

Okay, you're done!
You just made your first weapon!

Post your outcomes(if you didn't copy the weapon's shading and shape pixel by pixel)!
More tutorials coming soon...

You CAN do it with MSPaint. It'll just be a little harder.

Might want to give them a palate to use.

Generally, you shouldn't need palattes. I don't use them, anyway.

PALETTES.
Jeez.
You can't give someone palettes to use because you are restricting their color usage, a palette is only useful as an example of shades.

That's when they change the settings... The palettes give a basic structure to start off with so you don't have to spend countless time finding colors.

You'll have to redraw the sword COMPLETELY for a lot of stances.

Not completely, but you'll have to fix the outlines and replace a few pixels.

You'll have to redraw the sword COMPLETELY for a lot of stances.

All you really need is 3 frames: Straight, rotated, and side view.
